St Patrick’s College, Lacken Cross 6 – 1 St. Kilian’s Deutsche Schule Dublin
Back in the mists of time when the people of Lacken spoke to St Patrick in a dream, the great man surely never imagined that the famed coastal community would produce a team of football magicians.
On Friday last a band of young ladies traveled from that ancient land in search of silverware. They journeyed to Longford in the centre of the island to face the might of Leinster in a battle to be crowned Ireland¹s best and returned with their booty later that evening
The concession of a goal after just five minutes threatened to rock the Mayo girls to their foundations but they settled to their task, drew level, took the lead and raced to glory.
Up in the stands the youngsters from Lacken, Killala, Kilfian and Ballycastle gloried in the style and skill of their team as the girls in green demonstrated why they¹re so highly rated.
Their star player, Irish international, Aileen Gilroy, almost opened the scoring after just eight seconds when she raced through on goal but she tried to be too precise and the ball licked the post as it rolled wide.
That miss looked costly five minutes later when St Kilian’s centre-forward Anna Heisterkamp volleyed home a fine goal from the edge of the box after Lacken failed to deal with a corner from the left from Chloe Mustaki.
The goal rocked Lacken Cross and it took them some time to get into their rhythm, but they persisted. Elaine Lowther led her team¹s fightback and on three occasions the team captain very nearly hit the net only to be denied by Kilian’s goalkeeper, Ellen Nolan.
Lacken continued to drive forward in search of the equaliser and with Rachel Healy, Niamh Collins and Sorcha McGee building a foundation in midfield they peppered Nolan¹s goal.
Kilian’s had ten behind the ball as they tried to hold back the Mayo waves but it was a futile exercise and after 27 minutes the dam burst. Aileen Gilroy ran 20 yards through the heart of the Dubliners defence and almost tore the net off its rigging with a shot that Nolan didn¹t even see.
Six minutes later Lacken were in front when Aoileann Collins drilled home after seeing her initial effort saved by Nolan. The lead was doubled shortly afterwards when a sweeping move ended with Aoileann Collins bending in a cross from the right and Gilroy driving home a header from six yards.
That left the Mayo girls 3-1 in front at the break and it was hard to envisage a recovery for the Dublin girls.
The Mayo defenders were in superb form with Emma Loughney, Sarah Farrell, Martina Walker, Ailish Healy and Siobhan Kearney not giving their opponents any time or space in which to express themselves and that enabled the Lacken attackers concentrate on the business end of matters.
Six minutes after the break the result was decided when Gilroy dug out a superb cross from the right and Aoileann Collins got in front of two Killian¹s defenders to send a header to the roof of the net.
Gilroy was in sparkling form and led her markers on a merry dance with stunning runs and threatening shots. She almost had another goal in the 54th minute when she left three defenders in her wake but her effort just cleared the crossbar.
Aoileann Collins grabbed her hat-trick in the 63rd when she raced onto a Gilroy through-ball and slipped her shot into the net under Nolan’s despairing dive.
Fittingly, Gilroy also notched her hat-trick when she danced and dodged past four tackles and drilled home her side’s sixth goal in the 70th minute as the girls from the ocean readied themselves for a return to the ancient land proudly carrying their golden treasure.

Lacken Cross overcome St. Mary’s of Newport

St. Patrick’s College in Lacken Cross had a comprehensive victory over Tipperary side St. Mary’s in the UMBRO FAI Schools Senior B Girls National Semi Final last week which was played at Terryland Park, Galway.
Stephen Lacken’s team were assured easy access to the All Ireland Final after an array of first half goals courtesy of Aileen Gilroy (5), Aoileann Collins (4), Rachael Healy and Niamh Collins.
St. Mary’s put up a gallant effort with some superb defending by Eilish Ryan and Claire Cunningham. Unfortunately the onslaught was too much for the Tipperary defence at times.
Sarah Berkery was very strong up front for the Munster Champions but the final ball failed to deliver any real goal scoring opportunities for St. Mary’s.
The second half was matched by further goals from top goalscorer Aileen Gilroy (2), Aoileann Collins, Elaine Lowther (4), Martina Walker and substitute Sharon Killeen.
The impressive St. Patrick’s College will now face St. Killian’s DSD in the All Ireland Final which is scheduled for Friday, 12 February at Flancare Park, Longford (KO 1pm).

Colemnstown Utd 4 Killala 1
An severely understrenght Killala U-12 boys team gave a good account of themselves last Saturday 30/01/10 but lost 4-1 to Colemanstown United of Galway in the 2nd round of the Connaught Shield.
After a tight opening 15 minutes Killala’s inexperience showed as they went one down.
Killala had most of the play for the next 10 minutes and their efforts paid off after a great pass from Jack Maughan sent Shane McAndrew through to slot passed the Colemanstown keeper to level the score. The home side were ahead again within 2 minutes after their best move of the game. The score remained 2-1 to the home side at half time.
The Killala management were left scratching their heads after 2 clear penalty appeals for handball were turned down in the 1st half yet early in the 2nd half a hanball in the box by Killala’s Keith Higgins resulted in a penalty for the home side and a straight red card for Killala’s defensive linchpin.
The resulting penalty was brilliantly saved by Peter Lynott but it was a Colemanstown player that was first to react bundling the ball over the line to give the home side a 3-1 lead.
Another refereeing decision left everyone watching the game at a fine Colemanstown venue wondering what happened when the Colemanstown manager was sent off while treating one of his injured players.
The 10 man Killala team pressed the Colemanstown team all the way with Shane Mcandrew, James Togher and Kevin Healy all making the home keeper work hard on several occassions.
In the dying moments of the game Colemanstown scored against the run of play against a stretched Killala side to secure a deserved 4-1 victory.

Kilala 3 Manulla 0
The Killala girls finished off their most succesful season to date with this comprehensive victory over holders Manulla at Milebush Park on Saturday.Killala started and finished the game on the offensive and only for the heroics of the Manulla keeper Orla Dempsey, the deficit between the two teams would have been much greater. Inside the first 20 minutes she saved from Aileen Gilroy ( twice ) Aoileen Collins, Alanna Naughton & Niamh Collins as Killala dominated proceedings and peppered the Manulla goal. After half an hour though the girls finally made the breahthrough when a perfect through ball from Niamh Collins tempted Dempsey out and Rachel Healy won the race and finished to the net with an equisite chip. With the halftime score at the minimum Manulla were lucky to be still in it and Killala knew that another goal would give them the cup. The secondhalf started much similar to the first with Killala having all the ball and a screamer from 30 yds being from Sorcha McGee being tipped over by the keeper. it was all Killala now and long range efforts from Aileen Gilroy and Niamh Collins were all stopped by the in form Dempsey and Alanna Naughton had two great chances to seal it . Manulla did get a shot off on the hour mark but the ever alert Emma Varley easily dealt with it. It was after this that Killala struck the killer goal , the excellent Killala defense broke up a Manulla attack and released Aileen Gilroy on the half way line and she outpaced the Manulla defence to score the second. Alanna Naughton wrapped it up minutes later when she scored a well deserved goal to cap a brilliant personal performance. Captain Elaine Lowther filling in at left back along with fellow defenders Martina Walker, Eilish Healy and Aoife Munnelly were the rock that this victory was built on and their competence gave the freedom to the rest of the team to carry the game continuously to the opposition. Killala 3 Clew Bay Utd 1
A large crowd at Asahi Park on Sunday morning saw Killala finally banishing the spectre of relegation. It was a must win game for both sides, the visitors needed 3 points to confirm promotion and the hosts needed the 3 points to keep out of next weekends relegation dogfight. A goal from Rory Gallagher was enough to give Killala a slender halftime lead when in truth it could have been 5 all as woefull finishing by both sides was the hallmark of the game. In the second half tho Killala took greater command and as Clew Bay looked nervous and cautious two further goals from David Lowther eased Killala home and handed the title to Ballygalss, much to the joy of their delegation who were in attendance.Clew bay now face the daunting trip to Achill next Sunday there they will need at least a point to get promotion. Killala girls came out top in this semi final match played at Courthouse St. on Sunday. Despite missing a number of players who were on Connaught schools duty in Athlone it was a quite comfortable win for the home side who gave starting debuts to Jacinta Munnelly and Grainne McHale at U16 level and both girls were excellent. Goals from Alanna Naughton (3) Aileen Gilroy (4) Sorcha McGee 1 Elaine Lowther 1 Jacinta Munnelly 1 and Karen Lawlor 1 put Killala through to the Final where Manulla await. Renmore win 4.3 on pens
Killala had a host of chances to win this game in normal time but with the scorline 1-1 after the 90 Extra time was played and it finished 2-2 so it was down to the dreaded penos. It was Ronan Heffron who gave Killala the goal in normal time and Mark McLoughlin scored the extra time goal. In the shootout Peter McDonnell, Jonny McNulty and John Clarke scored from the spot but Renmore managed to score one more than Killala and moved into the next round.
