This was an easy end of season win for the Killala girls as they used it for a warm up for next weeks cup semi final against Westport. a goal after only 4 seconds from Aileen Gilroy set the tone for the match and when Rachel Healy made it 2.0 a minute later it didnt look good for the visitors. Aileen Gilroy (6) Niamh Collins (3) Elaine Lowther (2) Rachel Healy (2) Aoileen Collins (1) Alanna Naughton (2) were the scorers in this one sided game. in this must win game for Killala at Courthouse St on Sunday a free kick from the edge of the box left them a goal down at the break despite having numerous chances to take the lead. Just after halftime a volley from 20yds by Peter McDonnell levelled the game and settled a nervous looking home side before Rory Gallagher grabbed the winner with a fine solo goal. A HEADED effort from Trevor McDonnell eight minutes into the second half of this cup tie on Sunday afternoon proved the crucial difference between the sides, in a closely-fought match which hung in the balance until the very end.
In a first half which saw neither team fully grab hold of the game, Killala were first to threaten, with Marc McDonnell working well down the right flank before seeing his attempted cross fly just over the Swinford crossbar.
A quick Swinford response ended with McDonnell playing through strike-partner Alan Carter, but his tame shot was easily saved. Arguably the best chance of the opening period fell to Swinford’s Robbie Quinn after 11 minutes. A well-placed corner from McDonnell found Quinn in the box, but his thundering header flew just wide of Sean McHale’s right-hand post.
Killala came close just a few minutes later, as good work from Mark McLoughlin released Noel McLeish, but his cross floated just out of reach for Noone.
Killala were hit with a heavy blow towards the end of the half, as midfielder Ronan Heffron, who had been dominating the centre of the field, was forced to make way with a knee injury, to be replaced by Alan Murphy as Swinford finished the half strongly.
The home side also began the second period brightly. Centre-half Niall Feeney, who was excellent throughout, saw his header from a Matt Gallagher pass clear the crossbar, before Páid Noone had a golden chance to put his team ahead.
A precision pass from Quinn cut the entire Killala defence out, and allowed Noone a one-on-one meeting with McHale, but his clever lob landed inches over the bar.
Nevertheless, the feeling was that Swinford’s breakthrough was only a matter of time, and so it turned out. In the 53rd minute a huge goalkick from Conor Campbell travelled to the Killala penalty area.
None of the Killala defenders were willing to attack it, allowing the ball to bounce all of three times, before McDonnell leapt higher than the onrushing McHale to put his side in front.
Killala refused to be easily beaten, and continued to push forward in search of the equaliser, but what chances they had of finding it were severely hindered when striker Mícheál Noone went down with a knee injury with 20 minutes to play. Having used all of their available substitutes at that stage, Killala were forced to play out the game with 10 men.
This release of pressure for the Swinford defence allowed them to really take control of the match, and close the game out clinically. Indeed, the winning margin could have been doubled in the final minutes, as substitute Adrian Moran found himself unmarked in front of goal, only for his effort to be well blocked.

Killala u-14 boys went out of the Connacht cup today in a very entertaining game on a score of 3-4 after extra time.Killala started off playing with confidence and took an early lead through M Keane. S&F soon equalised only for Killala to lead at half time with another by M Keane.The second half started again with both sides going forward and Killala went 3-1 up with Keane completing his hatrick.Straight away S&F scored again and ten minutes later it was 3-3. Killala still had chances to win it but extra time brought a penalty miss for Killala and a late S&F goal to win it.A last gasp penalty claim by Killala ended the match.

KILLALA AFC 0 STELLA MARIS 3
KILLALA’S heroic cup run finally came to an end in Castlebar on Sunday but unfortunately there was no jubilation at the finish. The young Killala girls had made themselves a force to be reckoned with right from the start of the competition.
They had come through numerous battles, scoring great goals and beating high profile teams such as St Francis, Dublin and Wilton United, Cork but their final pairing with Stella Maris FC was a bridge too far. The Dublin team were deserving winners, they passed the ball better and were more clinical in front of goal.
Stella Maris were given a platform on which to build when scoring after just two minutes and hard as they tried, Killala just could not recover. A corner-kick was swung in dangerously by Rosanne Maguire and broke to the edge of the box where Stella’s Lisa Murphy was waiting to crash the ball to the net. It was a super strike and gave Killala goalkeeper Emma Varley no chance.
Stella Maris applied some further early pressure, especially down the left wing, but Killala were defending extremely well and clearing their lines without much difficulty, despite a few half chances falling to Rosanne Maguire and Deidre Mulligan.
Killala did look dangerous on the break but the Stella Maris defence was superb all day, and did exceptionally well to deal with the pace and trickery of duo Aileen Gilroy and Aoileen Collins. The pair fashioned a couple of half chances as the half developed but nothing that troubled Ashling Dyer in the Stella goal.
Killala were well in the game midway through the first half, they were tackling hard in the centre and the diligence of their two wingers Alanna Naughton and, in particular, Elaine Lowther to their defensive duties was admirable. Stella’s second goal arrived on 30 minutes however, and was pretty much unstoppable, an absolutely stunning piece of play that originated at left back in a sweeping move up the pitch.
Left back Dayna McDonald started the move, played a neat one two and added a back heel to the mix before the ball was crossed excellently by Lisa Murphy and headed in by the centre forward Nadine Hughes. It was a move that would have graced any venue and it put Stella Maris in a great position as they held a two goal lead at half-time.
Killala, to their credit, didn’t give up and pushed hard after half-time in search of something that would get them back into contention, but again the Stella Maris defence held firm and denied them any clear cut chances, breaking at speed whenever the ball broke down.
Killala had battlers all over the field with Martina Walker at the back doing particularly well to stop a lot of Stella Maris attacks. Elaine Lowther and Aileen Gilroy were doing their very best in the attacking third and got a few shots away but their industry was not enough to break the Stella guard, as the Dubliners looked technically superior and a lot more comfortable on the ball in all areas of the park.
Killala kept surging forward but they still couldn’t penetrate the Stella box. Corners and free-kicks always looked promising but there was no bounce that favoured them on the day.
With five minutes remaining on the clock, Stella Maris bagged their third goal whish settled the tie once and for all. This time it was player of the match Niamh Kearney who got on the score sheet. Killala were caught with numbers forward when eventually the ball ended up with Stella’s Sarah Miley on the right wing. She flashed a pass across the goal low and hard towards the back post where it was mishit by two Stella players before Kearney provided the decisive finish.
It was a very disappointing end for Killala, but they can take pride in the fact that they put up a very gutsy performance and were only defeated by an extremely skilful Stella Maris side.

Star of the show was striker Aoileen Collins with seven goals and a brace by Alanna Naughton and one apiece from Karen Lawlor and Rachel Healy rounded off the scoring. Killala u-16 boys finally win with a 3-2score away to Claremorris B.On a windy wet evening Killala found themselves 2-0 down after twenty minutes due to some very poor defending.A 35 yard shot by D O Boyle hit the roof of the net on the half hour and ten minutes later Killala were level with a P Carey goal.Against a strong wind Killala defended the second half and also created many chances.Finally J Lally finished one of them and Killala held on for the win.

In attrocious conditions at the valley , Killala managed to to earn a point in their battle to stay in division one. Killala gave first starts of the season to David Boyd, Martin McLoughlin and Peter McDonnell as they battled to over come a list of nine players who were unavailable due to injury suspension and work commitments.But the team looked balanced and despite a first half of constant bombardment from a wind assisted rovers team young keeper David Boyd had only seen his goal breached on one occasion. The second period was all Killala with Kevin Whyte, Noel McLeish ,Jonny McNulty and Martin McLoughlin all had chances before Peter McDonnell swung in a corner that flew in at the back post to give his team a point but on the balnce of play they could have got all three .Team David Boyd, Matt Webb, Aidan Ferguson, David Cadden, Peter McDonnell. Castlebar Celtic 5 Killala 4
The Killala ladies came away from Celtic Park on Sunday in disbelief that they had scored 4 goals away from home and still ended up on the loosing side. Forced to field without first second and third choice keepers Killala had to go with striker Aoife Herbert in goal but she could not be faulted for any one of the 5 conceeded. It was the visitors who started the brightest and it was no surprise when Nicky Leonard volleyed home from an Elaine Lowther corner on 11 minutes. Celtic were soon back on level terms when Emma Mulin scored 5 minutes later. Mullin then gave them the lead but the Killala ladies pulled it back when Emma Gilroy made it 2-2. The home side once again hit the front from a corner 10 minutes before the break but Aileen Gilroy kept the goal rush coming just before halftime when she finished off a lovely thro ball from Patricia Coyle to make it 3-3 at the break. The Killala ladies carried the game to Celtic in the second half and when Ailleen Gilroy put them in front midway into the second period it looked good for the visitors as they had chances from Alanna Naughton and both Gilroys well saved as they went to make the game safe. Celtic wern’t finished though and a poor defensive clearance was punished when the ball was poked home in the Killala goal for the equalizer. Just when the game seemed to be going towards extra time after such a free flowing game of football Celtic were awarded a dubious frre kick at the edge of the box and up stepped the castlebar captain Katie Walse to fire home the winner for her side and leave the Killala girls shocked. This was a great team performance by Killala where everyone of the players did their bit but it was not to be on the day. In this battle between first and second place teams it was the Killala girls who came out best and moved 5 points clear of their hosts by virtue of this emphatic win at the Ballyvarry sports grounds last night. on a very mucky pitch Killala hit the front when Aoife Munnelly played in Elaine Lowther and her low cross was finished off by Aoileen Collins. The homeside equalised 10 minutes later but then Killala had their purple patch and Alanna Naughton hit the post 3 times and Rachel Healy hit it once before Niamh Collins volleyed the visitors in front just before half time with a tremendous strike from 25yards to leave the score 2-1 in her teams favour at the break. Killala continued their dominance for the second period and Aoileen Collins completed her hat trick and Substitute Aileen Gilroy also grabbed 3 in a second period completly dominated by the much stronger Killala Girls.
