The curtain came down on the Mayo Women’s League with the Under 17 League Cup final between Manulla and Killala. Manulla were the inaugural winners of the competition in 2009 and were looking to retain the trophy. The game, played in Manulla, started at a frantic pace, with international star Aileen Gilroy looking dangerous when going forward. Indeed, the Under 17
World Cup star opened the scoring after 15 minutes when she sidestepped a challenge 25 yards out from the Manulla goal and rifled a low, left-foot shot into the bottom corner.
Killala doubled their lead 10 minutes later when a Manulla clearance rebounded off Jacinta Munnelly and looped over the head of the stranded Manulla ‘keeper, Orla Dempsey.
Manulla struggled to get a grip in midfield and Gilroy doubled her tally and gave Killala a three-goal cushion just before half time when she volleyed home from the edge of the box.
The second half was a different story. Manulla pushed Stacy Frayne into a more forward position and began to get a grip at midfield. Laura Mannion looked capable of reducing the arrears, but there were few clear-cut chances.
Manulla’s Aoife Brennan worked hard to retain possession around the midfield area, whileHannah Flatley worked tirelessly up front until replaced.
But with the power and craft of Aoileen Collins and Gilroy, Killala always looked dangerous.
The game could have changed in the first half when Collins was booked for a reckless challenge that was late and high, but she got enough of the ball to warrant just a yellow card.
Killala were reduced to 10 shortly before the end when Sorcha McGee was red carded for a second bookable offence, but the game was secure at that time.
Michael Jennings presented the Under 17 cup to Killala captain Aileen Gilroy, while Jeremy Dee presented the most valuable player award to Killala’s full back Aoife Munnelly who didn’t set a foot wrong all day.
